Hello all, I’m a student who’s interest in doing some genetics study in my free time. I’ve also been fascinated by aquarium fish since I was a little guy. So I put two and two together and devised that I would try to breed some fish for some genetic study. Obviously, I would be sure to take adequate care of them for my own enjoyment as well. No fish will be harmed.

My question then, is what kind of fish to use and how to get them to breed. I have, currently, a 20 gallon tank in use (with 2 Glo-fish and some cories), and a 10 gallon and 55 gallon tank with nothing in them.

I have considered using either Danios or Mollies based on the cost-per-fish and ease of breeding. (As well as the fact that they come in noticeable diff. color varieties that can breed together.) Which option do you think would be better? Any other options? What are good resources for breeding each one?

I’m kind of a new hobbyist so I may need help figuring out how to cycle, properly breed etc. I also don’t have an unlimited budget so bear that in mind as you answer, and please be thorough.

Today I bought my first tropical fish, 2 swordtails and another fish but the pet shop didnt know what breed it is. It is blue/green with orange tips and about as long as the swordtails. Here are some pictures (sorry its hard to photograph)

Thanks guys, that looks like it.
They kept it with the swordtails in the pet shop, thats why I bought them together thinking they were compatable. Do you think if I buy it a mate it will stop the nipping (not that ive seen it happen yet), Is there a way to tell the males from females?

I am setting up an aquarium. I want it to be saltwater/tropical, because They are like so much prettier. Anyway I have a couple 1 gallons, 2.5 gallon, 10 gallon, 20 gallon high, and 20 gallon long. And I have a heater, for 10 – 20 gallons, 2 filter/pumps, lots and lots of gravel , decor, backgrounds, fish nets, like the entire line of tetra-color fish foods, fish nets, lights, water thermometers, and various fish disease and water treatments. So now all I need is to choose what kind of fish I want, read up on them and purchase them. Price really isn’t all that much an issue as I have saved up a couple hundred dollars and am willing to splurge. So what kind of fish would you get and why? Also what kind of fish can a betta be kept with, and can more than one betta be kept in a tank? I have the materials and skills needed to build a bigger tank, when I had my aquatic turtles I built an aquarium for them that was 4′ long, 3′ wide and 2′ tall. And I built my Leopard Gecko’s enclosure. So I do know how to build a bigger enclosure, when the fish get a little bigger. Also Betta’s can be kept with other freshwater fish, I just do not know which breeds, that is why I asked.

im looking to get freshwater tropical fish for a 20 gallon tank and im not sure where to start, i have a water heater and necessary equipment but i dont know which kind of fish to add i want several fish that are colorful and look good. What should i get?

I have a 29 gallon tank with 2 fancy guppies (one is pregnant) and a ADF how do I make it look like its tropical? i also want to add more fish, what kind of fish can i use with the fish I have already? I also have one live plant. I want it to look its best.
