Pollution and global warming are pushing the world’s oceans to the brink of a mass extinction of marine life unseen for tens of millions of years, a consortium of scientists warn. Dying coral reefs, biodiversity ravaged by invasive species, expanding open-water “dead zones,” toxic algae blooms, the massive depletion of big fish stocks — all are accellerating, they said on Monday in a report compiled during an April meeting in Oxford of 27 of the world’s top ocean experts. Sponsored by the International Program on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), the review of recent science found that ocean health has declined further and faster than dire forecasts only a few years ago. These symptoms, moreover, could be the harbinger of wider disruptions in the interlocking web of biological and chemical interactions that scientists now call the Earth system. Their current demon is “global warming” said to be caused by CARBON DIOXIDE. An evil-sounding chemical, huh? I learned in, like, the 6th grade (1957), that carbon dioxide is PLANT FOOD. It’s what plants “inhale” so they can “exhale” OXYGEN . . . which is what we INHALE to stay alive. An increase in CO2 will result in an increase in plant growth. (They’ve got more to “eat.”) This will result in more oxygen for us, our pets and other animals. The world tends to self-balance. But Americans today, apparently, aren’t being taught that CO2 is “plant food.” Only that it’s an evil chemical AND that you’d better give up your car and stop using electricity because CO2 is going to destroy the world.
