Discus or Rainbowfish?
Welcome to my first question, lol.
I’ll get right to the point here. I’ve recently come to posses a beautiful 70 gallon aquarium with all the bells and whistles used for a very good price. I’ve been keeping fish for less than a year, but in that time I’ve become very learned in the ecology of an aquarium environment and I plan to make this 70 gallon a naturally planted type aquarium based on Diana Walstad’s model. I run a 10 gallon aquarium with the same concept and the results are so beautiful and low maintenance that I couldn’t imagine making anything else.
So the question is, should I fill my new tank with Discus or Rainbowfish? I’m a little weary with discus because they are notorious for needing very clean water and specific parameters in water quality (even though I’ve also read that modern domestic discus are much more hardy then their previous generations).
Although my experience is fairly low, I know that I could keep these fish successfully. I also don’t want to end up staring at a PH gauge all day stressing about the health of my fish.
On the other hand, Rainbow fish are an attractive and active fish which fit well in a community and can tolerate many water parameters from mineral content, PH, etc. They also lack the certain docility that discus have which I find interesting and entertaining in fish. I specifically have a great desire to keep forktail rainbowfish because of their interesting look and personality.
So I’ll point out my plans for each scenario and hopefully some of you can give me advice
With discus
~Group them with a large school of harlequin rasboras (20+). They share similar needs in water quality and will make a good peaceful addition to the tank.
~2 Honey Gourami
~1 Betta? (Likely the same one I have in my current 10 gallon tank)
~3-5 discus total will be the centerpiece fish of the aquarium.
~The tank will be filled with more small grassy plants and less tall stem plants to accommodate the discus’ taller body structure.
With rainbowfish
~Keep a large variety of different types of rainbowfish including turquoise, boesemani, forktail, australian and madagascan.
~Include some platys (6+). My local mom and pop pet shop has some really pretty sunburst platys.
~1 Betta. I’m confident that my betta will fit in just fine with all the rainbowfish whereas I’ll have to be more cautious with the discus.
~Include a larger background of tall stem plants to help hide the tank background and provide stuff for the fish to swim around including amazon swords and flowering lotus plants.
~Add a powerhead or two to the tank for the rainbowfish to swim against a little.
So as you’ve already found, I’ve thought about this quite a bit already. Although the filling & aquascaping of my tank is a far off thing (At least two more months) I’d love to hear some info and opinions from people who have kept any of these fish.
Thanks for any advice
How do you grow live plants in a tropical fish tank ?
I have a tropical fish tank(10 gallon) and i want to grow live plants but i don’t know how?
or how many plants to put in my 10 gallon tank.
Large Angle Fish?
I have a large angle fish (3-3 1/2 in.) in a 10 gallon tank. I used to have 4 neons in the tank while setting it up, and my angle fish seems to like to eat them. I was wondering about some suggestions of other fish that I could add to this tank without my angle fish having a feast of live fish. Thank you in advance for your help.
Questions about Guppies? (Pictures included)?
Hi! I am going to have a 10 gallon tank. I was going to keep Guppies and Platies in their. They would have to be all male because I don’t have room for breeding. But, then I heard that the male Guppies can sometimes fight with the male Platies… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRP1hThJLBk
So, then my next thought was just to get an all guppy tank. I really like the fancy tailed guppies. The guppies at the pet store I go to look like this:

Except with a solid color tail. Those tails don’t really look "fancy" to me… is that just because they are babies? Will the tail grow out nicely like these?

Also, another example is if you scroll down I like C, not K:

Finally, my last few questions:
1. If I have all males, will they fight?
2. I cannot risk having all females, one could already be pregnant
3. How many guppies could I keep in a 10 gallon?
THANKS!
Thank you all so much! =)
Ok, thank you AnimalGirl! I will be sure not to get all males. You mentioned that they fancy tails are commonly sold at pet stores, DO they look like the first picture, or are they just labeled "Fancy Tail"
Thanks again!
Alright… now I’m confused because Gary C says I can keep male Guppies together…
Tank mate for my male betta (cory cats)?
I have a 10 gallon tank with one male betta in it. I used to have another male betta in there with a tank divider but he died a couple weeks ago
so my other male has had the whole tank to himself. I also got a Oranda Goldfish and put him in there with the tank divider for a few days until I could get him his own tank and my betta HATED him, he was constantly flaring at him and biting at the divider (the two Betta’s were rarely aggressive to each other after the first few weeks together, like they knew they couldn’t get to each other and gave up), I would have to scare the goldfish away after a while because the betta would get so worked up I was afraid he was getting too stressed.
But anyways, the betta is now alone again in the 10 gallon tank but I just feel like it is so huge and he is so small. I’m thinking about adding some Cory’s but I don’t know if I should. I am head over heels in love with my betta so I want him to be as happy as possible. Would getting 4 Cory’s upset him? I’ve read a lot of places that Betta’s can live with Cory’s but would he prefer to be alone? I have a lot of plants/fake logs in the tank so there are definitely hiding places. The tank is just so huge I partially feel like its a waste for one fish. But at the same time, if that’s really whats best for him I’ll keep it like that, he is so spoiled haha but I’d also love to add the Cory’s if it wont really effect him. So, please let me know what you think, thank you!
